SPOOKY MAN 11th/12th September
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO S TABERNER
Melbourne-based choirleading guru and spookmeister Stephen Taberner comes to Penzance for a one off journey into the latest things that are turning him on. The workshop may include new body and vocal percussion titbits, some choice Polynesian songs, how to blend, a multi part pygmy extravaganza, secret ditties from the Spooky Men's Chorale (including tips on how to sing like a bloke), and maybe something infernally funky as well. Stephen has an absurdly eclectic musical pedigree, and promises to ransack every musical area to give you a zingling tingling thingly feeling which will linger long after the evening has finished.

Stephen was born in New Zealand, but moved to Sydney where a perfectly unorthodox life as jazz double bass player and computer programmer was hijacked by an extended encounter with world music choir "voices from the vacant lot". Before he knew it, he was a choirleader and then a singing songwriting double bass player.

As a massed choir leader Stephen is best known for his work with the Choral Sea in Sydney (1996 and 1998), and the Millennium Chorus in Melbourne (2004-6) and he is also notorious for his leadership of the Spooky Men's Chorale, which he formed in 2001. He currently directs the Spookies and community choir Yirriba as well as his work with the Millennium Chorus and an increasingly bewildering programme of singing or songwriting workshops throughout Australia

Welcome to the Levow an Bys website. Please do look at the other pages.

We are a community choir based in Penzance, Cornwall and lead by the widely experienced musical director, Michele Brown.

We meet in the Community Room at Humphry Davy School, Coombe Road, Penzance, on Wednesday nights through the school term, between 7 and 9pm.

Everyone and anyone (over 16ish) is welcome to come and join in. There's no audition, you don't need to have sung before, you don't need to read music, all the songs are taught 'by ear'. If you can read music then the dots are available for many of the songs.

The repetoire is varied as implied by the choir's name and comes from Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe and America in two, three and sometimes four-part harmonies.
